Concretely illustrating this story are the apparatus, instruments and equipment items, all triumphs of scientific imagination in their day, all for a while the latest and best of their kind, but then surpassed. 

Stories have been told about how telephones were burned, buried, crushed, thrown off the end of piers and destroyed in many other diabolical ways. This is precisely why they are so hard to find today. 

I suppose one could say that I fell into antique telephone collecting by accident. I was working for Redwoods Telephone Company, a very small independent telephone company in Cave Junction, Oregon. My title was "storekeeper.
