Throughout human history, science has been dependent largely on our ability to measure our natural world. Without the gizmos and gadgets we use to measure things, science as we know it would not be possible.

The ocean surface is the most climatically sensitive boundary on the planet. Less than 3m of water has the same heat capacity as the entire atmosphere above it, so the transfer of heat and other properties through the air-sea interface, such as moisture, gas and momentum is of great importance.

We use sound in the ocean for many things such as mapping the sea floor, locating objects, finding oil and gas, and tracking whales. These applications depend on knowing where the sound came from, i.e., it's direction.
